A Little History …

AMR at Pensacola, INC. (AMR) is a 501 (c)(3), non-profit organization and state certified Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO). As one of Escambia County’s largest non-profit affordable housing organizations, AMR has been involved in the development, preservation, and management of affordable housing throughout the County since 1989.

AMR’s story began in the mid 1980’s, when the founder, a local real estate attorney and developer, witnessed a growing number of families in need of affordable housing and  facing evictions from their homes. He witnessed children living in unsafe conditions and observed that many families had minimal help accessing affordable housing. It was then that he vowed, “We can do better.”

AMR uses an innovative scattered site model, which has been inspired by the concerns over poverty concentration and quality of life for decades. Scattered site housing is defined as the construction or acquisition of low-density buildings (generally fewer than 15 units per site) in poverty concentrated neighborhoods throughout a city or metropolitan area (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development).

AMR’s scattered site properties provide residents with a unique housing offering that recognizes the dignity and worth of each individual and family. Residents have options including single family home or duplexes with individual yards. Each residence provides a private space, and thus inspires a greater sense of pride and ownership among residents as compared to more concentrated multifamily community living alternatives.
